Health Program
The Health Community Clinic has been open to the community since 2001. This was a donation of the British Ambassador in 2000. An Agreement was signed with MINSA Ministry of Health to provide the clinic with medical attention at least once a week.
The Barrio Los Laureles has a large population of 10,000 and in these past years thousands of its inhabitants have been attended, 60% children and women. Programs of vaccination, have been given to the barrio. Also, working with MINSA NITCA established 20 Casas Bases (family houses with First Aids and IV for children in case of Dehydration).
In 2006 NITCA projected a larger and more specific program of Health. We named it Prevention Project for a Healthy Life. Particularly addressed to prenatal women, and to adolescents, in the area of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Also in the prevention of uterine cancer, from which two deaths were already reported in the barrio.
This program came to be because of the generosity and compassion of Rev. Dick Harding (Massachusetts), President of the board of our counterpart, Friends of NITCA in New England.
In approaching his 80th birthday, he asked friends and donors not to send any presents to him but to use that money to fund this Prevention Project for a Healthy Life that NITCA envisioned. US$11,000 were raised and the Program started at the beginning of 2007.
A nurse with lots of expertise on the subject and well connected with MINSA is coordinating it. She is also training 4 Promoters among our adolescents. These youths are receiving a small stipend for the first time in their lives (most of them are under 18).
The nurse is also acting as a doctor treating and seeing patients as well as writing prescriptions to be obtained at the MINSA's. Another VIP mission is taking Papanicolau exams to women who feel very comfortable with another women in place.
For the first time it has been possible to develop a program of family control, so needed in this very poor barrio, where there are so many single mothers and men do not have a permanent job.
It will be very important that this program will continue into the future, therefore NITCA will continue to fundraise for the extension of the same next year.
