Louis Feinstein Elementary School - Barrio Los Laureles Sur

After 5 years of efforts on the part of NITCA along with the Community of Parents who organized to bring school to the barrio, the Louis Feinstein Elementary School became a reality. The funds for the construction came from ALMA Municipal City Hall Managua, and FISE (Emergency Social fund).

A Dining Hall was needed to cook the basic grains and food stuff that the government granted the School.

NITCA´S counterpart in New England (USA) Friends of NITCA raised the funds for the construction of the Dining hall.

Feinstein Foundation donated the money to equip both, the School and the Dining room. Other great contributor was Guillermo Chavez, from California.

The impact of the school in the community has been tremendous. 500 Students (both genders) attended in 2008 thus decreasing that much the amount of children without schooling.

Parents did not have to pay for transportation nor tuition because public schools are free now. Children are not at risk, since the school is in the midst of the community.

From the beginning, after the Dining Room was built Children have received a daily lunch in both shifts: Morning and Afternoon.

Promotion of Six Graders to High School

  • On December, 2008, twenty eight Six Graders from the Louis Feinstein Elementary School, having met the needed requirements, ended their studies as Elementary students to go on High School.
  • Parents decided to dedicate the Promotion to Rosa Capella, NITCA´s founding Member. There was a very happy day for parents and students, who saw realized their vision and work to get a School in the Barrio.
  • NITCA´s Technical Team was present to share with the Director and Vice director of School, with parents and students that happy day.

Opening by the Ministry of Education of First and Second grades in our Preschool - 2007

Near one million children are without school in Nicaragua, (caused by the fact that parents had to send their children to work and they did not have money to pay for schooling).

The present government and its Minister of Education ruled that all education would be free. Parents rushed to put their children to schools, not being enough of them.

NITCA offered half of the Preschool building in the afternoon. The Delegate of Education agreed to open a multi-grade (first and second grade) in our Preschool. It started with 40 children, there are now near 60 children (boys and girls).

NITCA has overextended itself, and these children are given a nutritional light meal, as well as NITCA does with the afternoon Preschoolers. Most of the children families are very poor and their parents unemployed.

Children at Risk, referred to Protection Centers for their Psycho social attention

  • In general, Parents have acquired conscience of the improvement of their children and have accompanied them with more attention when they visit and more stimulus to continue their studies, whether there are formal or informal education.
  • As a result, Interfamily relations have improved so it has the knowledge among parents of the fact that their children have rights.
